Meadowbrook families, staff, and District 28 community members gathered at an open house on April 9, 2026, to celebrate an exciting milestone: the opening of the school’s new gymnasium. The new gym marks the first project to be completed as part of the district's $94.9 million Build 28 initiative.

“During the first half of the school year, we watched each week as the new gym was constructed from the ground up, and we are so excited to see the final product!” said Dr. Ginny Hiltz, Meadowbrook Principal. “Our students and staff began using the gym for P.E. earlier this week, and it was wonderful to see the joy on their faces as they explored the new space. We are incredibly grateful to our community for investing in our schools!”

During the event, guests were invited to explore the bright and modern 9,000-square-foot space and take in its updated features, some of which include:

  • Dedicated restrooms for student convenience
  • Wooden floor built to enhance athletic performance and safety
  • State-of-the-art sound system
  • Competition-sized scoreboard
  • Bleachers

The district worked with DLA Architects to design the space and Happ Builders to build it.

From physical education classes and assemblies to school performances and community events, the new space is designed to serve as a hub of activity for both students and the broader school community. Not only will it be used by the Northbrook Park District, but it was also designed to be a community storm shelter in the event of a weather emergency.

The new gym is the first project completed as part of the district's Build 28 initiative, which was made possible by the community's support of a $94.9 million referendum in April 2025. In addition to the $94.9 million approved by the community, the district is using $20 million from its operating funds to fund the projects.

The largest project slated for the district is building a new Meadowbrook School, which is now in the very early stages of construction. During the open house, guests had a chance to view schematic design renderings of the new school. It is anticipated to be completed for the start of the 2027-28 school year and will seamlessly connect to the new gym.
